Top cops monitor capital’s entry, exit points : High security for joint session of parliament

ISLAMABAD: The capital was put under tight security on Wednesday with thousands of police personnel having been fanned out across the city in connection with the in-camera joint session of the parliament.The area around National Assembly (NA) was declared Red Zone and its entry was restricted to holders of special cards only. Law enforcing officials patrolled the area and foreigners were directed to use Diplomatic Enclave gate near Convention Center. Law enforcement agencies (LEAs) checked every vehicle and identity of passengers before allowing them to enter Diplomatic Enclave or Red Zone.Barricades were erected at every entry point to Constitution Avenue including Margalla Road, Zero Point Road, and Radio Pakistan junction. Barbered wire was used to close footpaths in Red Zone and sensitive buildings.Snipers from law enforcement agencies (LEAs) took positions on high-rise buildings around the NA. Armoured personnel carriers (APC) were also on standby at different points.“In order to have fool-proof security in the capital, 10,000 officials of Islamabad police backed by Frontier Constabulary (FC) and paramilitary forces have been deployed throughout the city,” a security official told Daily Times. Vehicles were searched thoroughly at entry and exit points of the capital. High-ranking police officials remained present at these points on Kashmir Road, G-10, G-9, G-11, Sabzi Mandi, Agha Shahi Avenue, Bhara Kahu and Faizabad.Sources said inspector general of police (IGP) also monitored patrolling of the capital.Explosive-packed ambulance: Parking of vehicles was not allowed in front of sensitive buildings after intelligence agencies received threats of suicide attacks. It was reported that an ambulance packed with explosives had entered the capital.Security personnel were also deployed at big hotels. Residential sectors that housed offices of international organizations like F8, F-6 and F-7 remained almost sealed. The barricades have been erected on every street housing UN offices and two to five police officials besides private security guards checked vehicles at these streets.
