ISLAMABAD: Tourism Development Corporation Punjab (TDCP) will spend Rs 65 million to construct two new tourist resorts at Sakhi Sarwar near Dera Ghazi Khan and Bahawalpur to facilitate the tourists traveling to Gawadar.TDCP Regional Manager (southern Punjab) Sheikh Shoib told Daily Times on Saturday that the Punjab government had decided to promote tourism, especially in southern Punjab and two tourist resorts were a part of this project. He said the resorts would cost Rs 65 million. The Sakhi Sarwar resort, he said, was almost ready and it had 20 garages, 20 stay rooms, a swimming pool and a children park. Internet facility was also arranged for the visitors, he said.He said 32 kanals of land had been leased for Bahawalpur resort and its construction would start shortly. This resort would facilitate local and international tourists. Both resorts, he said, were in the middle of the way from Gawadar to China so their strategic importance was manifold.Bahawalpur’s 12 palaces and 56 forts: Shoib said southern Punjab was full of beautiful sites and Bahawalpur was the only city in the world having 12 historic palaces. Noor Palace was constructed on Italian style and Darbar Palace on European style, he said, and all other palaces were modeled after these two basic styles, he said.There are around 56 forts in and around Bahawalpur. Uch Sharif is another ancient place in the area. It houses many a Muslim shrines and has the distinction that Alexander the great passed through it centuries ago. International Desert Jeep Rally 2008: TDCP has decided to hold International Desert Jeep Rally in Cholistan near Bahawalpur on the second week of March 2008. The rally is continuity of a series being arranged in this area over the years.Shoib said TDCP had contacted Pakistani embassies to invite racers and spectators from all over the world. He said TDCP would arrange for boarding and lodging for all the guests to the event and that their welcome and farewell dinners would be at Darbar and Noor palaces.He said that TDCP would set up a tent city near Derawar Fort for the visitors. Stalls of continental and Chinese food would also be set up, he said.
