ISLAMABAD: The Local Government and Rural Development (LG&RD) Ministry has landed the Environment Ministry in trouble by asking it to vacate Local Government Complex in G-5 at a time when its original building, torched by miscreants during 2007, is under construction/renovation in Melody. The Environment Ministry had first shifted its offices to the ENERCON building soon after the arson attack and then to the LG Complex. The Environment Ministry occupies the LG Complex’s three floors. It’s learnt that the LG&RD ministry recently requested the Environment minister’s office through a notice for the LG Complex’s early evacuation saying it wants to shift its offices scattered in the capital city to the multiuse building. The Environment Ministry sources said Capital Development Authority (CDA), which owned the ministry’s original building, had been dragging its feet on the reconstruction/renovation work for around one and a half years. They said the ministry had given Rs 5 million to the CDA for initial work. They said the ministry was ready to release another tranche of Rs 20 million for the reconstruction/renovation work but the CDA had been denying the ministry handover of its plans to spend the money despite repeated requested. They claimed the CDA didn’t want to retain the premises as long as the Environment Ministry found some other place for its offices.Early this year and more precisely on the first week of February, former CDA chairman Kamran Lashari had announced completion of work on the Melody building in the next six months.A construction expert said the ongoing work would take at least six months to complete. When contacted, CDA Member (Engineering) Tahir Shamshad attributed delay in completion of work to the University of Engineering and Technology (UET), Taxila, experts’ ongoing study of whether the fire had affected the main structure. He said he would meet the UET experts today (Tuesday) in this respect. The CDA official said the building would be ready in two months if experts declared it unaffected by the fire.
