ISLAMABAD: Unannounced participation of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leaders Nawaz Sharif and Shahbaz Sharif in a rally thrilled hundreds of lawyers and civil society members, who were shouting slogans for reinstatement of deposed judges outside the Judges Colony.
The rally started off from the residence of Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) President Aitzaz Ahsan. Slight scuffles took place when the security personnel tried to hold the protestors back from the residence of deposed chief justice (CJP) Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry.
Nawaz was welcomed to the rally with loud slogans of “here comes the lion”. Making a speech from his vehicle, Nawaz said efforts of the civil society, lawyers and media for restoration of constitution and judiciary were praiseworthy.
He said people had rejected President Pervez Musharraf in the recent elections, so he must resign now. He said the deposed judges would be restored soon. “Time is not too far when you (protestors) will escort the (sacked) CJP and all other judges to their offices. Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry was, is and will be the CJP till the end of his constitutional term.”
Nawaz asked security personnel not to act upon “illegal orders” of the government otherwise people would not forgive them. He assured the protestors of reinstatement of deposed judges before they dispersed peacefully.
Earlier, the protestors shouted anti-Musharraf slogans and demanded immediate release of all detained lawyers and restoration of deposed judges.
Results of the recent elections fuelled the movement for restoration of deposed judges which otherwise was losing strength. The protestors were not allowed to enter Judges colony as security personnel had placed concrete blocks and barbed wire near Balochistan House.
The protestors put up placards and banners reading “demand of the nation, Musharraf’s resignation”, “restore judges immediately” and “release all detained lawyers”.
Superintendent of Police (SP) Nasir Aftab was present on the scene with a heavy contingent of police in riot gear, ready to counter any resistance. The police fired a few teargas shells to quell the protest. The shells dropped in the Sindh House, opposite to the Balochistan House.
