ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Environmental Protection Agency (Pak-EPA) closed down two poultry feed manufacturing units in Kahuta on Saturday, after finding they were polluting the environment.“We have been receiving complaints against these units since 2003. The manufacturers were told to adopt a proper method of production but they continued to cause environmental degradation,” Pak-EPA Director-General (DG) Asif Shuja Khan told Daily Times on Saturday. He said Environment Minister Hameedullah Jan Afridi directed the Pak-EPA to monitor the units on a complaint of Bahria Town administration. “During physical monitoring, the Pak-EPA found an unbearable smell that has covered Sihala and Humak. Its source was the two units in question, where animal and poultry waste was burnt in the open to make feed. The units that have been closed down are named Capital Feed Mill and HB Feed Mill,” Shuja said. He said animal or poultry waste could include a mixture of organic poultry dust, skin debris, broken feathers, insects, aerosolised feed etc and that their burning in the open could cause respiratory, viral and bacterial diseases. Pak-EPA monitoring team member Ambreen said poultry waste and blood were boiled so much that in big pots that they turned solid, giving out a stinking smell that pervaded the area. The units were closed down under Section 16 of the Environmental Act, according to which Pak-EPA could take such an action against an entity if it was not adopting measures to keep the environment clean. The monitoring team pointed out that two feed units, a poultry farm and a government-run slaughterhouse at Sihala were the major source of pollution in the area. They said these units were causing water pollution by pouring out their waste into nearby water streams besides polluting the air by burning animal waste in the open. Overall, four units are producing poultry feed. Residents of Humak and Sihala have been lodging complaints with the CDA regarding unhygienic conditions around the slaughterhouse and the feed units for long. They demanded that the CDA shift the slaughterhouse to a less populous area. Jamil Asghar Bhatti,a resident of Bahria Town, said people were reluctant to construct houses close to the units because of the air pollution they had been causing over the years.
