Death of 12-year-old boy by Islamabad Police ‘sharpshooters’: Father appeals to PM for protection from police blackmail

Inquiry committee formed to probe killing of 12-year-old in police firing
By Atif Khan and Fazal Sher ISLAMABAD: The district administration on Monday constituted a committee to probe into the killing of 12-year-old Zeeshan by Islamabad police when they fired at fleeing car thief while chasing him in Rawalpindi precincts.Interior Ministry sources told Daily Times that the prime minister directed the ministry to constitute an inquiry committee, and asked how the car thief managed to escape while being chased by the well-equipped ‘model police’. One of the committee’s members is Superintendent of Police (SP) Nasir Aftab, who was in charge of the team pursuing the car theif. Additional Deputy Commissioner General (ADCG) Rana Akbar Hayat heads the committee.A legal expert saw SP Nasir Aftab’s inclusion in the team as an attempt to clear him and his team. “One cannot be a judge in a case involving one,” Lahore High Court Bar Association, (LHCBA) Rawalpindi Bench President Sardar Asmatullah Khan told Daily Times. “Though Prime Minster Yousuf Raza Gilani has ordered an inquiry, I suggest there should also be a judicial inquiry into the incident,” he said.Asmat said that the First Information Report (FIR) held the car thief responsible for the child’s death. “If we suppose the boy was killed by the car-lifter, then it’s yet to be known if the casings of the bullets fired by the police and the car-lifter and the weapons used by the police has been collected and sent to forensic experts for examination,” he said. According to the FIR, Sub-Inspector Ahtesham, Assistant Sub-Inspector Muhammad Baqir and constables Asad Ali and Shahid Mehmood were patrolling in the G-9 area in a private car (IDE- 4626) when they were relayed an information by wireless that a car had been stolen from the same area and the car theif was heading towards Rawalpindi via 9th Avenue. Sources in the police department said that SP Nasir Aftab was present on the crime scene and the police officials entered the territorial limits of Rawalpindi in his presence and fired shots at the escaping car. There’s been no mention of Nasir Aftab in the FIR although he had told Daily Times by telephone late on Sunday that he was present on the scene. IG Asghar Raza Gardezi and Rana Akbar Hayat were not available for comments.
