Climate change: Met forecasts rains in next 48 hours
By Atif KhanISLAMABAD: The Met Office on Thursday forecast more rains in coming 48 hours and that the current spell of unusual monsoon rains would continue till first week of September because of climate change.Met Office Director General (DG) Dr Qamaruz Zaman Chaudhry, told Daily Times, “Rain with moderate to heavy dust storms in plains are likely to occur at different places in the NWFP, Punjab, Balochistan and Sindh during the running week.” He said climatic change had caused unusual rains and early start of monsoon this year. “Usually, monsoon starts from July 1, but this year it started in June,” he said. Chaudhry said although no emergency situation had been created in Nullah Leh yet the authorities were ready for one. He did not rule out the threat of floods in the Nullah in the coming days.He said water level in all rivers near the capital was normal except for River Kabul where a middle level flood was reported. He said excessive rains could cause flood in Nullah Leh. “From August 1 to 7, 195mm rain has been recorded in Bahawalpur and Islamabad each,” he said. Chief Meteorologist Dr Ghulam Rasul said 10-15 percent more rain was expected in Islamabad and Rawalpindi in the present monsoon season. The rains, he said, would make for water shortage and leave a positive impact on rice and sugarcane crops. He said Khanpur and Sahiwal had not witnessed such heavy rains over the past 100 years as they did this monsoon. Floods in Mardan, Peshawar, Dera Ghazi Khan and Rajanpur were a result of mismanagement of rainwater, he said.
